Key Examiner Advice for Paper 5 Success
  • Burette Readings require Two Values: Always calculate burette uncertainty as [(0.05 x 2) / Titre] x 100. A single reading is not enough because the initial and final levels are both read.
  • Mass by Difference requires Two Weighings: Uncertainty on mass transferred is [(0.01 x 2) / Mass] x 100 because the boat is weighed with solid and then after emptying.
  • Condenser Water Direction: Water must enter the condenser jacket at the lowest point (bottom) and leave at the top. If water enters at the top, air pockets remain trapped and cooling is uneven.
  • Never Seal a Heated Apparatus: Quickfit distillation setups and reflux condensers must always be open to the atmosphere. A sealed heated apparatus will experience dangerous pressure buildup and explode.
