Unit 1 (CH01) tests fundamental physical and inorganic principles that underpin all higher-level chemical reasoning. Questions assess theoretical understanding, mathematical problem-solving, and practical laboratory techniques tested in written context.

Examination Series & Windows

Unit CH01 is examined in both the January series and the May/June series. Candidates can sit CH01 in January of Year 12 as an early benchmark, with the full freedom to resit in May/June to bank the highest score.

Modular Flexibility

Marks achieved in CH01 can be cashed in alongside CH02 for the standalone International AS award (code 9621), or carried forward indefinitely towards the full International A-Level award (code 9622).

  • Zero Intermediate Rounding: Never round intermediate numbers in multi-step stoichiometry. Store numbers in your calculator memory and round only at the final reported answer (typically to 3 significant figures).
  • State Symbols in Ionic Equations: Net ionic equations require accurate state symbols: (s), (l), (g), or (aq). Omitting state symbols forfeits easy marks.
  • TOF Mass Spectrometry Precision: Distinguish carefully between Electron Impact (EI, which forms fragmented M+ ions) and Electrospray Ionisation (ESI, which adds a proton to form [M+H]+ ions with minimal fragmentation).
  • VSEPR Justification Structure: State the number of electron pairs (bonding vs lone pairs), state that electron pairs repel to minimum repulsion, identify the lone-pair extra repulsion, and state the exact bond angle.
